Play’n’GO really seem to know a good formula for a slot game when they find it, and as a rule of thumb, any slot that ends with the words ‘of Dead’ is near guaranteed to be a solid entry. This series has now taken on almost cult status amongst online slot players with multiple sequels and follow-ups to the original Book of Dead. One of these is Legacy of Dead, an entry to the series that’s everything you remember and just a little bit more.
Let’s take a look at what Play’n’Go have for us in terms of gameplay and mechanics, and just how much they’ve tweaked that winning formula.
If you’re a veteran of Book of Dead, there are a few things that you’re immediately going to notice about the design in Legacy of Dead. Firstly a lot of the overall design is going to look very familiar with a lot of the symbol designs making a comeback from the original. The only symbols that have had a change up are Mr Rich Wilde himself transforming into Tutankhamun with a shiny new paint job and the old Book of Dead changing to a glowing golden mausoleum design. Even the animations stay the same, although it does look like everything is showing in a slightly better quality, especially the new background image.
For the layout, they’ve moved around a few buttons and options while improving the graphics quality on most of it, but otherwise the core layout remains the same. You’re going to get the standard 3×5 reel layout which won’t change at any point, with 10 win lines and the option to make single bets from 0.10c up to 100 per spin. There’s still an auto-spin feature as well as fast spins, which we activated by manually spinning quickly a few times. The RTP of Legacy of Dead actually sits slightly higher than the original at 96.58% but still remains at a high volatility rating.
First off, select the size of your bet on the bottom bar with coin value, coin number and the number of lines you want to play. Remember that there is an auto-spin option there for you and you can set this up to stop at a set number of spins, any win or extra spins bonus, or just by how much it affects your balance. If you’re feeling like you need an extra bit of spice to your Egyptian adventure, you get the chance to gamble on every win. With a deck of cards on screen, you can double your winning by calling the correct card colour, or quadruple it by picking the correct suite. You can keep doing this until you lose, but remember that when you do lose, the lot of goes with it!
As we mentioned, in this game Tutankhamun takes the place of the highest paying symbol with a payout of up to 5000x in the base game, which is a number also shared with the tomb wild symbol itself. After that, you have the god Anubis at a max win of 1600x, then the original pharaoh and bird god Horus at 600x. Completing the line up are high-value card symbols, with the A and K maxing out at 160x and the Q, J and 10 hitting a max of 100x. An unusual touch carried over from the original is that all 5 of the top value symbols will actually
Match up three or more golden tomb wild scatters, and you’ll enter the bonus round with 10 Bonus spins. This is where Legacy of Dead expands a bit on Book, as it takes the original bonus feature and adds a little something extra. When you start the bonus game, one high-paying symbol is randomly chosen to become a special symbol which will expand over the whole reel. In Legacy of Dead, if you manage to retrigger the Bonus spins with more scatters, it selects another symbol and makes that special as well as the first one. Seeing as there’s no limit to how many times you can retrigger, it’s possible to get every high-value symbol expanding meaning guaranteed wins if you manage it at least 4 times.
Is it revolutionary? No. Is it pushing the boundaries of modern online slot games? Nope. Is it solid fun? Absolutely. It’s very hard to go wrong with the Book of Dead formula, and Legacy of Dead simply polishes that game up and gives a little more zing to the bonus feature. You can try it for yourself here at 21 Casino but if you liked the original, we can’t see why you wouldn’t get really into this sequel.
